St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17th and was originally a day to observe St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The history of the holiday dates back 1,500 years and the first recorded celebration was held on March 17, 1631. Now, it’s a day filled with special food, music, dancing, parades, drinking, and wearing green!

St. Patrick’s Day presents a big opportunity for e-commerce. According to Statista, the average person will spend around $40 dollars on this holiday. The spending has gone up over the last few years, imagine how much more it will go up when people can get together safely after Covid!

St. Patrick’s Day Symbols and Product Ideas

We want you to succeed with your St. Patrick’s Day campaigns and we’ve gathered some fun ideas and marketing inspiration to get you started!

Wearing Green

Green wasn’t introduced to St. Patrick’s Day festivities until the 18th century when the shamrock (also green) became a national symbol for Ireland. After that, green was associated with the holiday and now everyone wears their favorite green apparel all day long. Make sure to use green as you create designs for this holiday.

Shamrocks

The shamrock has always been a sacred plant in Ireland and eventually became a symbol of Irish nationalism. When the English began to seize their lands, many wore the shamrock as a symbol of their pride. Since St. Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday, it’s associated with the festivities of the day. Add a shamrock or two to your festive design for even more St. Patrick’s Day appeal.

Leprechauns

Another icon of this Irish holiday is leprechauns! They stem from the Celtic belief in fairies. According to their folktales, they were cranky tricksters determined to protect their gold at the end of the rainbow.

They’re also another reason to wear green. Irish tradition says wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns who like to pinch anyone they see.

Leprechaun hats, shoes, rainbows, and pots of gold are all design elements you might consider using!

Kiss Me, I’m Irish!

“Kiss me, I’m Irish” is more than a fun phrase Irish people love to say (and wear), the phrase originates from an old legend that said kissing the Blarney Stone will bring you good luck and eloquence. The Blarney Stone is located in the Blarney Castle in Cork, Ireland.

If you can’t travel that far, then legend says if you kiss someone who is Irish, you might be lucky enough to kiss someone who has kissed the Blarney Stone. “Kiss me, I’m Irish” is a popular phrase for shirts, mugs, and even jewelry.
